In March of 2011, Lions Gate announced that over 30 female
actresses auditioned for the highly sought after leading role of Katniss
Everdeen, including adored teen stars Abigail Breslin (My Sister’s Keeper; Nim’s
Island), Emma Roberts (Aquamarine;
Scream 4), and Shailene Woodley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager),
but it was Oscar-nominated, indie film star, Jennifer Lawrence who caught the
producers’ attention. “Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful,
vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find
somebody this amazing for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her
play it.” (Suzanne Collins, http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/03/21/hunger-games-suzanne-collins-jennifer-lawrence/)
To get into character for her role,
Lawrence underwent many changes, such as having to dye her golden blonde hair
the dark brown color Katniss has in the novel, and extensive physical training
to get her in shape for the physical demands required by the role. Her physical
training included activities such as archery-which was essential to the plot of
the film- as well as rock and tree climbing, as well as combat, running, and
yoga. Lions Gate hired professional archer- and Olympic bronze medalist-
Khatuna Lorig to aid Lawrence in her archery.
Also,
Lions Gate announced that there were several contenders for the male lead of
Peeta, including Abercrombie model, Alexander Ludwig, aspiring teen star, Lucas
Till (Hannah Montana: The Movie ;
Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me”
music video), and Disney star, David Henrie (Wizards of Waverly Place). But it was teen heart-throb, Josh
Hutcherson (Zathura, Journey to the Center of the Earth), who
won the role. (Although Ludwig did not win the leading role of Peeta, he did
receive the supporting role of Cato, a tribute in The Hunger Games.)
Other
cast members include Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket,
Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, and
Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman.
